First set of maps in progress

Hello folks!

Out of Sight has been a nice puzzle game to design and to playtest. The prototype counts 8 maps featuring a couple of mechanics (like sneaking, stabbing and shooting guards) and I had to be sure that all "levels" are playable. I played it in a VTT with generic tokens, on a dry-erase battlemap with plastic standees and sketched level configurations on numerous napkins.

Now comes the hard part: actual graphic design of my levels. I am using Dungeondraft to create these 8-by-8 grid maps. I do not consider myself a graphic artist − even though I am trying to learn some basics − so drawing maps takes a lot of time. It even takes some extra time because I am trying to pay attention to the following details:

  • What does my blocked out layout resembles the most in a generic medieval city? I do not want all levels to look like a field with random walls built in it but a somehow believable space.
  • Where the current place is located within my fictional city? The protagonist tries to sneak into a well-guarded castle to slay the despot king. Therefore, the first levels must look like a city outskirts while the last level should look like... Well, you will discover it eventually :)
  • Each space should be a believable space overall. A guard patrolling near a river will likely form a footpath; a guard who remains at the same spot is probably doing something (e.g. cooking near a fire). I try to add some small details to each level because I like to find such details in the games I play.
  • As the protagonist progresses through the maps, the time goes on. I would really like to make maps where the lighting varies from afternoon to night. It implies modifying overall colors but also fires, props, etc. Not a big deal at the first sight but it's actually not that simple.

Currently, five out of eight maps have been done. After the remaining maps are drawn I will do a second pass in order to make them a bit more homogeneous. After that, a new version of Out of Sight will likely to be published :)

Thanks to those who have tested the game so far and stay tuned!
